Storage Tips

  • Tip 1: Storage Space Preparation & Planning

Your first step should be gathering boxes, markers, packing tape, bubble wrap and other storage supplies. Then, make an inventory list you can refer to after everything is packed and stored away.

  • Tip 2: Packing & Storage Selection

Once you’re ready to start, organize items by room and start packing them in boxes. Don’t forget to clearly label your boxes on all sides. Fragile items should be wrapped in protective material and labeled.

  • Tip 3: Maximizing Your Space

Dresser drawers, washing machines, and dryers already have built-in storage space. Use the empty compartments for blankets, silverware, towels, knick-knacks, etc. If you have furniture that has removable legs, remove them for optimized space. Stand up mattresses and couches on their end to conserve floor space.

  • Tip 4: Proper Storage Techniques

It’s wise to only rent the space you need by finding the smallest size that will house all of your items. Before moving anything into the storage unit, place a sheet of plastic on the floor. You can also line the unit with 2X4s if you don’t want your items touching the ground.

Design your space so that the items you need to access regularly are located at the front of the storage unit. Expensive and valuable items should be placed in the back of the unit, hidden by other belongings.

Protect furniture by draping blankets on top and be sure to wipe down metal items with machine oil to prevent rusting.
